How to Properly Jump-Start a Car

Whether you’re at home in Lincoln or on the side of the road, car issues are never convenient. While helpful bystanders may be available to lend a hand, you can also call a jump-start car service like AAA or the manufacturer’s roadside assistance program for help. With a set of jumper cables and another vehicle, here’s how to jump-start a car:

  1. To jump-start a car battery, start by making sure the vehicles are facing each other and the parking brakes are engaged for safety.
  2. Make sure the car with the good battery is turned off and pop the hoods of both vehicles. Remove any coverings to expose the battery terminals.
  3. Identify the positive and negative terminals and take the time to clean any corrosion that has built up, if possible.
  4. To begin the proper way to jump-start a car, attach the red jumper cable to the positive post of the dead battery.
  5. Attach the other red jumper cable to the positive battery terminal of the vehicle with a charge.
  6. Be sure to keep the remaining black cable separated. Then, on the negative terminal of the good battery, attach the correct black cable.
  7. To keep the final black clamp out of the way, you can connect it to an unpainted metal surface on the vehicle’s frame.
  8. After all the cables are secure, you’re ready to begin to jump-start the car battery. Turn on the vehicle with the working battery, then the vehicle with the dead battery.
  9. Once the vehicle with the dead battery is able to start, you can carefully remove the cable in reverse order to how they were placed.
  10. You’ve successfully learned how to properly jump-start a car! Be sure to let the vehicle with the refreshed battery run for at least 10 minutes or take a long ride on the highways around Blair to ensure the weak battery doesn’t die. You can find recommended run times in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
