Engine coolant is formulated so that it won’t freeze below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and it won’t overheat above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Luckily, if you’re new to at-home maintenance, learning how to check coolant levels is a great introduction! Why? Because you don’t even have to open the radiator cap to check the fluid level. Instead, you can check the markings on the side of the reservoir to see if the liquid reaches the “full” indicator. If not, remove the radiator cap and add the coolant or a 50/50 mix of coolant/water. Be sure to check your coolant to see if it’s pre-mixed. You can also take this chance to inspect the hoses connected to the radiator to see if there are any leaks or damage.
Note: If you do need to add more coolant to the system, be sure to let the engine cool down. Don’t even attempt to open the radiator cap until your vehicle is cooled.
Coolant should be thinner than oil, but thicker than water. If you notice the liquid has become sludge-like, schedule service with us immediately. This is often a sign that your vehicle has an internal gasket leak. Driving under these conditions is possible, but it will quickly drain your coolant. Once the coolant is gone, your engine is at great risk of overheating.
Naturally, coolant levels deplete over time, so you’ll want to check your coolant system every three to six months. In most cases, the liquid is blue, green, yellow, or red. If the color of the fluid is brown or clear, you’ll need to flush the system and replace the fluid.
