Checking oil level on dipstick

As arguably the most essential component for your vehicle’s safe operation, engine oil takes on a major role. With that in mind, it’s critical to learn how to check car oil to ensure that your commute from Omaha to Lincoln continues without a hitch. Since oil lubricates all of the moving parts in your engine, an issue with your oil can quickly spell disaster for the major systems under the hood. To prevent these hazards, read on with the Sid Dillon Mazda service staff to discover how to check the oil level in your car today!

Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Many new vehicles are equipped with electronic oil monitoring systems that handle oil checks on your behalf. However, if you want to learn how to check car oil with a dipstick, follow these simple steps:

  1. Start by parking your vehicle on level ground and shut off the engine. Allow the engine to cool before proceeding.
  2. Open the hood of your car and locate the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out and wipe off any lingering oil.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into the tube, remove it, and review where the oil level sits.
  5. If the oil streak is within the marked area, you have a sufficient volume. If not, you’ll need to slowly add a few ounces of oil at a time to top off.

Be sure to review your owner’s manual instructions on where to locate your dipstick and what grade of oil is needed for your vehicle.

Why Check Your Car’s Oil Level?

While easily forgotten, oil is critical for safe driving. As mentioned above, oil is used to lubricate the moving parts within your engine to prevent friction. If oil is allowed to degrade, the excess friction and heat inside the engine will lead to warped components and unnecessary damage. While you’ll want to get your oil changed about twice a year, you should check your oil on a monthly basis. This enables you to spot leaks, contaminants, and other issues. If you notice poor oil quality, smoke from the engine, or your hood is too hot to touch, schedule service with us right away. You may have an oil leak that’s causing your engine to overheat. Do not try to drive with an overheated engine.

How to Reset Oil Change Light

Every make and model may have different specifics for resetting the oil change light, but the general process remains the same. While you can reset your own oil light, you’ll want to be sure you’ve actually handled the issue before taking this step. Ignoring oil changes can be disastrous and costly.

How to Reset Oil Change Light: Step-by-Step:

  • With the engine running, turn off the systems of your vehicle.
  • Locate the “reset” button or stick on the dashboard.
  • Hold the button down until the oil change light flashes (the reset signal may differ based on the vehicle).
  • Turn off the ignition, wait a few moments, then turn your vehicle back on.
  • At this point, your oil change light should be reset!
